About Ethical Blooms

Making it easy to find sustainably grown, locally sourced flowers across the United States.

Ethical Blooms is a free online directory that helps consumers find eco-friendly florists and flower farms across all 50 US states. Founded in 2025, the directory aggregates verified listings from trusted certification bodies — including USDA Organic, Certified American Grown, ASCFG, BloomCheck, and Local Harvest — into a single searchable database. Each listing displays transparent credential badges showing exactly where its information comes from. Users can search by city or zip code to discover nearby businesses that prioritize locally grown, seasonal, organic, and chemical-free flowers. Ethical Blooms is completely free for both consumers and businesses, with the goal of making sustainable flower sourcing accessible to everyone and reducing reliance on imported cut flowers.

Our Mission

The flower industry relies heavily on imported flowers, often grown with intensive chemicals and transported thousands of miles. About 80% of cut flowers sold in the United States are imported, primarily from Colombia and Ecuador, according to the Society of American Florists. These imported blooms often travel 3,000 to 5,000 miles before reaching consumers, contributing to significant carbon emissions from refrigerated air freight.

Ethical Blooms exists to connect you with local, sustainable alternatives — florists and flower farms that prioritize the environment. By choosing locally grown flowers, consumers support their local economy, reduce transportation emissions, and get fresher blooms that typically last longer because they haven't spent days in transit. Our directory makes it easy to find these businesses no matter where you are in the country.

How We Build Our Directory

Our directory is compiled from multiple trusted sources, including publicly available certification directories and direct business registrations. Every listing clearly shows where its information comes from, so you can make your own informed decision.

Certification directories: Our listings reference organizations like USDA Organic, Certified American Grown, and ASCFG that maintain their own verified member directories.

Self-registration: Businesses can register directly and state their eco-friendly practices. Self-registered listings are clearly marked so users can distinguish them from third-party verified listings.

Our Review Process

Maintaining accuracy is important to us. Here's how we keep the directory reliable:

Regular data updates: We periodically re-import data from certification directories to ensure our listings reflect current membership status. If a business loses a certification, that change is reflected in our directory.

Manual review: Self-registered businesses are reviewed before being published. Listings that have been manually reviewed display a “Reviewed” badge. We check for accurate contact information, valid websites, and plausible eco-friendly claims.

Community reporting: Anyone can report inaccurate listings or suggest businesses that should be added. We investigate every report and aim to respond within 2 business days.

Understanding Credential Badges

Each listing displays one or more credential badges showing where the information comes from and what certifications the business holds. Here's what each badge means:

Veriflora Certified

Third-party verified by SCS Global Services for sustainable growing practices.

USDA Organic

Certified organic by the USDA National Organic Program — no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

Certified American Grown

Independently audited to verify flowers are grown and assembled in the USA.

ASCFG Member

Member of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers — dedicated to locally grown cut flowers.

BloomCheck Certified

California's sustainable cut flower certification — verified for water, air, soil quality, and worker safety.

Rainforest Alliance

Certified by the Rainforest Alliance for environmental and social responsibility.

Self-Registered

This business registered directly on Ethical Blooms and stated their own eco-friendly practices. Self-reported information has not been independently verified by a third party.

Why Buy Locally Grown Flowers?

Choosing locally grown flowers has meaningful benefits that extend beyond your vase:

  • Fresher blooms: Locally grown flowers are often cut the same day or week they reach you, lasting significantly longer than imports that spend days in refrigerated transit.
  • Lower carbon footprint: Eliminating thousands of miles of air freight dramatically reduces the environmental impact of each bouquet.
  • Fewer chemicals: Local flowers don't need to survive long shipping distances, so growers can use fewer preservatives and pesticides.
  • Support local farmers: Your purchase directly supports family farms and local economies rather than large-scale international operations.
  • Seasonal variety: Local growers celebrate the natural growing season, offering unique varieties that reflect your region's climate and seasons.
